Stein, Davies, and Tobias articles: Gramscian critiques of “Progressive” urban policies Subject:
1-2 pp. response to the Jimmy Tobias, Jonathan Davies, and Sam Stein articles, web link in this Learning Module, on the new housing movement in Rochester. Incorporate previous debate, (and materials and texts) we’ve been discussing about the city, class conflict, sources of problems, and the possibility of reform, or revolution? And how is Davies’ Gramscian view, an influence upon Stein? Specifically, on which class, upper, or lower, does Tobias, Davies and Stein seem to rely? Would you classify them as Progressives, like Park, Moses, Jacobs, even Mumford, who holds forth the possibility of a progressive State relying upon the upper classes in coalition with the lower classes, solving the housing problem? Or are they more like Fairfield, or other Marxists, who might have big doubts about such a coalition? Whom in the City, do they think, can be relied upon to create real progress and change? Finally, where do you stand?
