Violence Against Children and Adolescents Introduction Child abuse has become a significant concern in American and other countries as millions of children and adolescents are being placed at risk daily. In 1990, over 2 million cases of child abuse and neglect have been reported to social and human services agencies. In the period 1979 through 1988, about 2,000 child deaths (ages 0-17) were recorded annually because of abuse and neglect (McClain et al., 1993), and an additional 160,000 cases resulted in serious injuries in 1990 alone (Daro and McCurdy, 1991). Child abuse can be defined as physical, emotional and sexual abuse. Other forms of abuse include neglect, malnutrition, and human trafficking as many adolescents are victims of. • Children and adolescent between the ages of months old to the age of 19 are affected. • 12.4 out of every 1,000 children are victims of child and or physical abuse. • Preventative and protective services were implemented in efforts of protecting the children from the listed form of abuse. Some of the services provided include; foster care placement, in-home services to addressing the concerning behaviors, therapeutic counseling and legal actions based on the form of abuse exhibited against the child. Causes to children/adolescent abuse • Substance use disorder • Mental health status • Economic status • Adverse childhood experiences. • Poor isn’t child relationships • Lack of awareness • Ineffective parenting skills Some of the consequences include the child being removed from the biological parents care due to their ineffective parenting skills and or substance/mental health status. While other consequences also include legal actions such as incarceration based on the type of abuse inflicted.
