The Speech of Defense or Advocacy Instructions Overview:
There are several parts to this assignment including: an outline, presentation, and a reference page. It is recommended that you review the grading rubric before completing this assignment. The speaker will deliver a persuasive speech of advocacy or defense in front of a listening audience. Advocacy speeches should promote a value or belief that you hold personally. Defense speeches will support or uphold a current policy that may be under attack in the status quo. Topics ideas should be approved by the instructor before too much work in done on the project. Your speech should use an appropriate persuasive organizational structure in all parts of the speech. The statement of reasons approach is required unless an alternate form is approved by your instructor. The speaker should use visual aids and technology as appropriate. The speech should be well reasoned and be a product that represents a balanced approach to the use of persuasive proofs appropriate to the context and audience. Students will receive comments on reasoning, research citations, bibliography, delivery and overall effectiveness of the persuasive speech . Sample topics: I believe the Supreme course was right when they legalized euthanasia. I believe that Hillary Clinton would have made a good president of the United States. I believe that Hillary Clinton should serve prison time for crimes committed while Secretary of State. I believe Roe vs. Wade should be overturned. I believe all Christians should take one year of their life and become a missionary. ——————————————————————————————————————————– Outline: You must develop an outline for your speech. It must include 4 levels. A sample outline is provided in the course assignment. Organizational structures recommended for this speech include: Statement of Reasons. Outlines of the speech should be complete to the 3rd/4th level of development and be in full sentence form. Speakers will speak from note cards and use extemporaneous style. Your grade will include assessment of public speaking effectiveness (70%), outline and bibliography (30)%.
