This course has followed the ‘development’ of social/cultural anthropology, from its underlying logics, through a selection of theoretical approaches, to the ways in which anthropologists and related scholars have taken on these approaches by way of critique. Your job is to discuss this history through your choice of ONE of the following lenses: 1. (In)equality and social status; 2. personal and social identity; 3. ‘the human,’ humanism, human ‘rights.’You are to show how conceptions of this issue have changed over time via social theory. To make your argument, you should demonstrate BOTH a thoughtful comprehension of the readings, and an engagement with lecture material and points raised in student presentations. Neither is a substitute for the other, though more relative weight should be put on your reading of the text itself – e.g., selecting interesting quotes, dissecting the argument, etc.
