Houston Art Museum

Over the course of this semester, we’ve spent a great deal of time on literature and philosophy, which are in some senses, the bedrock of the humanities. Nevertheless, they do not constitute all of the humanities, which include art, theater, dance, music and architecture. For this assignment, you will become more familiar with visual art by spending some time in an art museum. The purpose here is for your experience of the humanities to be broader than the one we can easily provide for you in class. Step one: There are lots of free art museums in Houston, and many (like the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston) that will give you free admission with a student ID. You may attend whatever museum or art exhibition you’d like. Step 2: Your assignment is to write a two page (700 words) report on the value of your experience. What I mean when I say “value” is an account of what it provides you with, or what it provides others with. This may be articulated in any way you see fit, but avoid words like “enriching” that only vaguely outline the parameters of the value of an experience. Be as specific as you can possibly be, and reference key aspects of your experience. What images or objects at the museum stood out to you? What aspects of the experience have stayed with you, and why?
