Instructions –

The essay utilises Gibb’s reflective cycle.

Using Gibb’s (1988) reflective cycle, reflect on an incident in your nursing practice which, has raised ethical issues for you. Gibb’s (1988) reflective cycle provides a framework for you describe the incident, identify ethical issues, explore your feelings, evaluate, critically analyse, draw conclusions and develop an action plan. Moreover, the use of an action plan enables you to set goals, keep on track and reflect on your progress within this Law and Ethics NCS3203 unit. Students are required to reflect on their professional practice incident or dilemma, their knowledge gained in weeks 1-6 relating to the legal and ethical principles, theories, torts, doctrines and professional regulation. Hence, this assignment allows you to reflect on your learning within this unit to enable understanding relating to an incident in practice.

Gibbs’ (1998) reflective cycle guides us through six stages of reflection:

What made you unhappy with this incident? E.g Scope of practice issues? consent,  confidentiality, respect, trust? Was anyone harmed? Did your learning enable you to make sense of the situation?

Who/what was helpful or unhelpful? E.g. Related to the incident or your learning.

Why? E.g. Did you feel supported in practice in your decision making?

What needs improvement? related to the incident Why? E.g. standards of practice? Code of conduct or ethics.

Analysis: what sense can you make of the situation?

 

NB This should be the main part of your assignment

E.g Compare theory and practice. Examine your dilemmas from the perspective of ethical theorists a deontologist versus utilitarian view. Do any of the ethical principles apply? Was there a duty of care and legal aspects was there an act or omission? e.g related to consent any negligence? Underpin relevant information with evidence. 

What similarities or differences are there between this experience and other experiences?

Think about what actually happened.

E.g Consider your professional code of conduct and ethical frameworks. Do any of the ethical principles conflict with each other related to this incident

What choices did you make and what effect did they have?

Qs Was there any harm? What were the consequences to the patient and or nurse? Civil or criminal?

What have you learnt for the future related to ethical dilemmas, the application of ethical principles, theories, legal framework?

 

Conclusion: what else could you have done?

Summary of the main points. What else could you have done?

Action Plan: what will you do next time?

What do you consider to be the ethical and legal issues or questions related to this incident? Apply any of the relevant unit content to your incident or dilemma.

Reflect on and critically analyse the relevant ethical principles and theories within your analysis discussion.

How are you going to address them? Create a logical argument supported by references within your analysis which, should be the largest part.

Justify your proposed actions or inactions. Discuss the implications.

What resources have you used from your unit content to assist you with the resolution or your dilemma?

Consider contrasting utilitarian and deontological approaches.  Comparing, contrasting and critiquing all demonstrate critical thinking.
