News Feature Story — 500 words plus a 5- to 7-word headline You have a lot of choice in this assignment. You may pick your own story idea, report it and write it. Tell an interesting story. You must use at least three sources — two people and one primary document. Be sure to answer the who, what, when, where and why of your story. And the how if you are explaining something. You may use a feature lead or a summary lead. You also must write a headline for your story. Write for an online, campus audience, or your local audience. Build in at least two hyperlinks with narrative anchor text. No first person point of view. Remember that you cannot use your own opinion or information from other news outlets. Instead of quoting an Associated Press story, for example, track down the sources the AP used and quote those documents or people from your own direct contact, if you want to use the information. Possible outline Headline (5-7 words; must use a verb) Story (500 words +/- 50) • Attention-getting lead that uses an anecdote or sets a scene (one to three paragraphs). • Nut graf. No later than the fourth paragraph. Why this is a story now – some sort of news peg that includes context or 5 W’s. A link to the data source may go here. • Quotation from source that backs up the lead or nut graf. • More facts about topic. • Quotation that explains the facts or reacts to them. • More facts, reaction, quotations • Strong ending. Telling fact or punchy quotation. • Source List (3 primary sources and reference or contact information for verification; at least two people.) Attached will be two example files.
