Book: Jane Eyre
This paper should show what you have learned about this remarkable character and your ability to write about it with control and coherence. Pick one topic below: 1. Jane goes through different temptations in the novel (re Adrienne Rich’s thesis). Take one and examine it fully within the section of the novel that it occurs. 2. From a feminist lens, can Jane be viewed as a proto-feminist for her time? Argue for or against. Be sure to use examples from the text and also from the readings. 3. In the chapter from Madwoman In The Attic by Gilbert and Gubar, they assert that Jane and Bertha have similarities, and that Jane is in danger of becoming another “madwoman in the attic” like Bertha. First, what do they mean by this madwoman idea? And further, how is Jane in danger of succumbing? Examine the two women’s differences and incorporate Rich’s temptation for Jane in this section of the novel (at Thornfield) and how she overcomes it – finally. 4. From a sociological point of view, Jane’s world has a deeply entrenched class system. Show examples of this from the novel. (Don’t forget Adele and Bertha and Mrs. Fairfax). Be sure to talk about the circumstances under which Jane’s place changes. (Hint: money) 5. Prove why it is impossible for Jane Eyre to enter into a loveless marriage, though it certainly calls out to her need to be wanted. This will require a close reading of the Moor House section and her relationship with St. John Rivers. 6. Romances all end in marriage. Is the novel a romance in the classical sense? What makes it different. Link to full book: https://books.google.com/books/about/Jane_Eyre.html?id=JuA0AAAAMAAJ&printsec=frontcover&source=kp_read_button#v=onepage&q&f=false
