Write a response essay in which you explore your response to the poem. Briefly outline the “story” of the poem – tell what the poem is about. Then write an essay that is your response to the poem. Your objective is to explain what the poem evokes in you. Does it trigger a memory or a series of memories? Does it remind you of yourself, your relationship with someone, your experience of the experience or someone you know? Be sure to ground your response in the poem. You should quote relevant lines (properly documented). You should discuss how the lines evoked the response you had. Put your reactions together in a well-organized essay. Don’t forget to include a work cited entry. Review the literature grading rubric for the criteria by which the essay will be evaluated. Review the sample papers on Blackboard to see how others organized their responses.
