Work and Self-esteem
In brief… this is a RESEARCH essay that requires you to do independent research related to Uchitelle’s article. Be sure to summarize the information in the article and use it as the centerpiece of the paper. At the same time, incorporate other research into your paper in order to support your thesis. According to Louis Uchitelle in his essay “The Consequences — Undoing Sanity,” one of the primary costs of layoffs is that they deprive people of a primary way to define their self-worth. Write an essay in which you reflect on the relationship between work and self-esteem. Consider using yourself or someone close to you as a case study. Can you think of a job you or someone you know has held or a career path that defines one’s self-worth? What would the effect be of having this particular work outlet taken away? Finally, research the current unemployment statistics (locally in Nevada and nationally). Find out what parts of the country is doing well economically and who is still struggling? What sectors of the economy are hiring? Based on your research, what parts of the country are good places to look for work? How is Nevada fairing in the economic recovery? Before writing consider this: PURPOSE — to demonstrate a careful reading of Uchitelle’s essay and to discuss your own experience with work and self-esteem. Be sure to compare your own experience or someone you know with that described in Uchitelle’s essay. Also, research the job market and hiring trends. Be sure to credit your sources in-text. AUDIENCE: your instructor FORMAT — Research; MLA Reminder: If you incorporate outside sources into your essay be sure to give them credit by citing them in your paper. Also consider reviewing rules about paraphrasing, summarizing and quoting. Keep in mind, as you start writing the research essay that it is like a synthesis essay but with more than one source. The trick is to manage and organize the many voices into a cohesive and intelligent discussion. Read the instructions carefully. –This essay requires that you do research. As such, it is very important that you cite your sources as you refer to them in the text (called in-text citations).
