What effects does gaming have on attention?
Evidence as to whether gaming enhances attention. Evidence as to whether gaming compromises attention Evidence that shows gaming does neither. Suggested starting reference Trisolini, D.C Petilli & Danini (2018) Is action video gaming related to sustained attention of adolescents? Instructions: “Your job is to present a compelling, evidence-based argument that clearly explains the effects of gaming on attention, and uses that evidence to demonstrate that gaming enhances/compromises attention. It is vital that you focus on answering the essay question and ensure that your essay is on topic – do not just summarise the research papers/textbook/lectures and ‘hope’ that it answers the question.” INTRODUCTION •Begin with a succinct, attention-grabbing opening sentence. The remainder of the opening paragraph should provide a general orientation to the topic, explaining why it is a contentious issue, and briefly outline how you intend to approach the question paragraph by paragraph (i.e., your introductory paragraph provides a preview of the structure that the essay will adopt). BODY •Your first body paragraph should begin the process of defining your terms (e.g., explain what attention is and define the different types of attention you’ll be focussing on), and presenting research evidence to support your argument (i.e., what effects does gaming have on attention). •Present a critical analysis of the research evidence that examines how gaming affects attention. When arguing that the evidence shows that gaming improves/compromises attention, you need to clearly explain what the study did, what the results were, and then use that evidence to answer the essay question. If you’re arguing that the study was conducted well, explain which aspects of the method were strong and why this makes the findings reliable (i.e., you need to use the evidence to convince the reader). •Throughout the body of your essay, you need to ensure that you relate the research evidence back to the essay question – i.e., make the implications of the research very clear to your reader (e.g., “Such evidence clearly indicates that gaming enhances/compromises attention). This will help you to build the strong argument needed to convince the reader of your position. CONCLUSION •The concluding paragraph should reiterate the main points of your argument and then sum up, making your answer to the essay question very clear (i.e., no fence-sitting!). Be consistent and use compelling language to convince the reader that your evidence-based argument is valid. Be very careful about: •Presentation, spelling and grammar. •Appropriate APA referencing style. •The use of secondary referencing (i.e., citing a paper that has been cited by another paper that you have read). If the paper is important enough to be included then you should go to the trouble to actually read it. It is far better to demonstrate your understanding by reading the original research article than to summarise someone else’s understanding by presenting information second hand, e.g., from a text book. •Determining the veracity of the methods used in the papers that you cite. It may be that a paper does not support the majority of the literature that you have cited, possibly because the methods used were in some way flawed. It is appropriate for you to ensure the methodological quality of all of the papers that you discuss.
