You are the head nurse of a 55 bed medical surgical unit in a local hospital. Your unit consists of 2 teams both led by an RN on all three shifts. Despite a full unit, staffing for the floor is poor. One RN, one LPN and one nurse’s aide for each side. The charge nurse assigned to side A always offers assistance to those working the floor. However, the charge nurse on side B never offers assistance. According to the job description patient care is not required by the charge nurse. Making assignments, rounding with physicians, and computing orders are primary. What can be done to facilitate a better working environment?
