Vehicle Safety – Automotive and Mechanical Engineering
Description
Part A (Max. 10 pages) With environmental and consumer demand to reduce fuel consumption and emissions, the automotive industry is keen to reduce vehicle weight. Two approaches using HSS and Aluminium are currently employed by the industry to reduce the vehicle body weight without compromising the performance. • Explain the applications of these materials. Discuss all of the considerations which they must take into account and make a proposal for your recommendations. You should address the following aspects in your report: material properties (Steel, Aluminium, and other lightweight materials), potential weight savings, cost, manufacturability and quality.
• Identify parts/structures which can be manufactured by additive manufacturing (AM). Discuss your answer and refer to “material selection process for AM” and performance requirements (mechanical and material properties) as appropriate. Part B (Max. 10 pages) 1- Identify five active and passive safety systems that assist in keeping occupants injury free in the event of a crash. For each one explain its objectives and operation using figures and diagrams to assist (Maximum of 5 out of 10 pages). 2- Discuss the design considerations for readability of in-vehicle displays. You may wish to consider: o Ergonomic factors which constrain the position of the display o Display technology types, sizes and locations o Treatments and costings that may enhance visibility o Design strategies for optimising readability o Assessment methodologies for display legibility
