You will be analyzing a primary source. You need to find, from a reputable website, a primary source. Make sure the document you use is related to American History from the dates covered to 1877. You are also to use the cogbooks US history to1865 as your secondary source. You may use other secondary sources as needed. Make sure you cite all sources used. Divide the analysis in the following sections (use section headings): Introduction – explain what your source is, who wrote it, what date and what is its topic. Finally, include in your introduction where you found it and why you think it is a good website. Summary – give a brief description of what the document is about. Make sure you cover the main points of the document, giving examples as needed. Analyze its validity. You are analyzing the primary source as if you had the actual document – this is not where you consider the website. Is this a reliable historical source? – explain your answer. Ask yourself: can we believe this material in this source, is the writer reliable, could he/she have an agenda, could he/she be biased… For your third section, using secondary sources, answer one of the following questions: What caused this event? [Causality] What was the effect of this event? [Effect] If this event had not happened, what would be different? [Difference] How is this different from today? [Comparison] Conclusion – For your last section, create a conclusion explaining how you would use the document and how it relates to our greater understanding of history.
