Unplug from your phone
For this assignment, you will spend 24 hours without accessing any social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and whatever other platforms you find yourself accessing throughout the day. You may also choose to abstain from access to other websites you visit for entertainment or to waste time, such as Buzzfeed, Reddit, YouTube, etc. If you’re really brave, you might even unplug from Netflix. The goal is to significantly change the way you consume social media and the web in general for 24 hours and then analyze and write about the effects of this change on your life. Do not use any outside source. Take notes! A good researcher knows how valuable those notes will be during the writingprocess. How many times did you find yourself reaching for your phone? When was thismost likely to happen? Were stop lights intolerably long? Did you miss somethingimportant that you had to discover in person? Did you take a picture you felt needed to beposted to the internet? Make note of all the times this experiment affected you in any way. After the 24 hours is up, formulate a thesis statement to describe your general findings, which you will explain and support in the body of your paper. Your findings may bepositive (you were more productive & peaceful), negative (you were full of anxiety andmissed out on important news), or a combination of the two. Perhaps the experimentchanged your understanding of the way you use social media or revealed something aboutyourself. These can all serve as thesis statements.
