Description Task 1 (AC 1.1) Understand the processes of fertilisation, pregnancy and birth. (1) Interpret the menstrual cycle. Make sure you know the sequence of events of the menstrual cycle over the 28 days and function of the hormones involved at each stage (oestrogen, progesterone, FSH and LH). (2) Describe the early stages of a developing embryo. Make sure you know the sequence of events after fertilisation to formation of the blastocyst and implantation and up to week 8 of embryo development. (3) Compare and contrast the role of hormones during birth and lactation. Make sure you know the important hormones and their function and the general sequence of events in childbirth and lactation. (4) Construct a table state the difference between the embryo at 3 weeks, 4 weeks, and 8 weeks. (5) what is the role of hormone testoterone in men? (a) Explain the pathway the sperm travels from the epididymis, through the vas deferens, urethra and penis in ejaculation and then into the vagina, cervix, uterus. (b) At ovulation the egg is released and passes into the fallopian tube where it is ready for fertilisation…explain how the sperm penetrates the egg. (6) with a diagram give a brief detail of the structure and function of the placenta.
