U.S.-Latin American relations during the Cold War
Lester Langley, an eminent historian of U.S.-Latin American relations, argues in his book America and the Americas: The United States in the Western Hemisphere: “a democratic country that persists in its undemocratic behavior in hemispheric affairs with a single-minded determination to isolate its enemies (who themselves may be undemocratic) is unwittingly isolating itself from a hemisphere it professes to lead.”(260-61) Drawing from class discussions/notes as well as the books (Holden and Zolov, eds. Latin America and the United States and Perkins Confessions of an Economic Hit Man), analyze U.S.-Latin American relations during the Cold War with an eye toward assessing Langley’s argument. Substantiate your argument with specific textual support/evidence. You need to use “substantially” both books: 1. Latin America and the United States (from #67 to #95), 2. The New Confessions of an Economic Hit Man: Include info from part I, part II, and part III. The link to the pdf is here: https://resistir.info/livros/john_perkins_confessions_of_an_economic_hit_man.pdf Cite both books. Do NOT use outside sources, only from these books; use info from both of them substantially.
