Thermodynamics of atmospheric pressure.
This is a very “high level” article that discusses the thermodynamics of the atmospheric environment on a global scale. By no means do I expect you to read and understand it in its entirety; however, with your new Thermodynamics training, you can understand the main point: temperature and absolute humidity are generally increasing in our atmosphere, while at the same time relatively humidity is decreasing on average. This trend is evident in figure 1, which summarizes more than a generation of atmospheric measurements. When these authors use the term “moist static energy” in figure 2, they are referring to the ENTHALPY of atmospheric air. Notice in figure 2, that the energy in the atmosphere is increasing as absolute humidity increases (where have you seen that trend before ?) For your extra credit assignment, you need to write a professional-level paragraph (or two) explaining how absolute humidity (AH) and temperature can increase, while relative humidity (RH) decreases. By using the definitions of AH and RH, you have enough thermodynamic knowledge to be able to do this…..but, you must do so in your own words, and you must do so using the new language you have learned in this class. This explanation must be written at a technical level which makes sense to someone who does not have the elite engineering training you have (like your average politician). You must use topic and summary sentences to frame your paragraph(s); this has to be perfect, if not your best professional effort. Why ? Because this type of effort represents what many of you will do in your jobs when you leave here…..you will be hired to explain technical issues to others that do not have the same level of technical training you have (like MBA’s, CEO’s and the like). They will rely on your ability to translate technical concepts into lay terms The last sentence or two of this assignment must explain to me, what you learned from reading this article in a simple and straightforward manner. The paragraph must be written with correct English grammar and spelling in its entirety.
