The roles of superstition in medicine
This paper is worth my grade. The following is instructions on the paper sent by my professor. Sorry instructions are so long!! Required to have 7 sources; two of which must be scholarly. Scholarly would be: Peer-reviewed Experts in the field Often associated education institutions/ universities Often associated with professional organizations No ads. Original research Technical language Databases: Collection of articles/dissertations/theses/etc. That have been verified and are reliable College subscribes to these databases – students use them for free access from school or home Databases to use (but not limited to): .com sites are not scholarly no blogs -Google/google scholar (as long as it is a scholarly source for the two scholarly sources we need) -proquest – both scholarly and non -JStor – all scholarly -CQResearcher – not scholarly -Opposing viewpoints – scholarly and not scholarly 2 MUST be scholarly but rest of the sources could be whatever you find to be genuinely credible Your paper should provide enough context about your topic so the reader understands the topic’s history/background as well as its relevance to modern medicine/healthcare. Your paper should also have an element of persuasion, so you go beyond JUST informing your reader. For example, you may take a problem-solution approach. Or, your goal might be to change your reader’s mind about your topic. You don’t have to stick to a traditional argument if your topic doesn’t fit it, but ask yourself: “Why does my reader need to know about this topic?” THE ESSAY: *Introductory Section (2-6 paragraphs or more) Provides a foundation for the rest of the paper It’s okay to use sources in intro section but remember to cite sources, even if you put the info in your own words Provides context for your reader *Reveal your approach/focus *Explaining what you are going to discuss versus what you’re leaving out Possible items to include in intro section: -Defining/explaining key terms (being on the same page as your reader) -History/background on your topics (don’t need to go back to the beginning of time, but if there is a history, include it in your intro section) –How long has my topic been discussed by medical profession/society? Even recent topics might have a history –Was there a specific event that caused my topic to be important—put my topic on the radar –Any individuals/discoveries? -Demographics/statistics “hard” data –Trends over time (increase or decrease) –Scope of the problem –As recent as possible, but if you want to show that something has increased or decreased, okay to use data that shows trends –If reader is part of demographic, info more relevant –Or, giving a face to the facts/drilling down into more detailed info about who is affected by topic/issue -Individual examples/stories from sources -Controversy or debate about your topic that you want to present ^DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR THESIS IN YOUR INTRODUCTORY SECTION^ *Transitional paragraph (one short paragraph): Need a research question and your thesis and that’s it! —-For example: Clearly, there is much debate about the role of religion in medicine, which leads to the question: should doctors in the United States consider their patients’ spiritual beliefs and practices as a part of treatment? Although there are arguments against the use of religion in medicine, Research shows/demonstrates that doctors who understand and encourage their patients’ spiritual beliefs are more effective. (try not to include “because” in your thesis) *Body (main ideas) (5 or more paragraphs) -Opposing view/opposition/counterargument (if there is one)—reasons or arguments against using spiritual belief/practices -Main idea #1—topic sentence that relates to thesis and presents main idea of paragraph —-Example: Doctors who respect their patients’ spirituality gain their patients’ trust. (Discuss the idea of trust and why it’s important.) (At least two sources to support this idea. Might use quotes or paraphrase a study that was done, or maybe quote what patients have to say. ) (Discuss evidence and relate to my thesis. ) -Next paragraph and main idea with topic sentence and evidence—patient follow up -Next paragraph and main idea with topic sentence and evidence—good communication -Next paragraph and main idea with topic sentence and evidence—correct diagnosis
