THE RECLASSIFICATION OF MARIJUANA.
This paper must be 7 FULL pages minimum. It should focus on the reclassification of Marijuana as a scheduled class 1 drug. Some health benefits of marijuana that can help its reclassification and the comparison of more harmful drugs that are classified in lower schedules than Marijuana. Research Proposal The controversial law that I wish to examine is Marijuana classified as a class one drug. Drugs that are classified as a class one or Schedule 1 drug are considered the most dangerous by the DEA.
According to the DEA “these are drugs with no current medical use, per analysis by the DEA and FDA. These substances also carry a high potential for abuse and addiction.” The law of marijuana is now controversial because some of society is set on the old thinking of what marijuana was introduce in the 1990s. For example, growing up marijuana was taught to children in elementary school with the D.A.R.E. program, as a very bad hard-core drug. The saying went “marijuana is a gateway drug and leads to more hardcore addicting drugs. As years went on we’ve learned that it isn’t a gateway drug and it isn’t a hardcore drug as crack/cocaine. In the time of today, we have research showing that marijuana can benefit those with certain health issues. Some questions to ask are why marijuana is still classified as a schedule 1 over drugs such as codeine or OxyContin are considered schedule 2? Marijuana is currently being used for medical purposes in some states, why is it still on any drug classification? Aren’t there stories or reports that claim marijuana can help people more than hinder people? Should Marijuana be classified as a schedule one drug? I’m interested in studying this law because it is mindboggling how a drug such as Oxycodone, Methadone and Cocaine are classified as less severe drugs than Marijuana. There is an opiate epidemic going on in today’s world however it is classified as level 2/3/or 4 drugs. According to the New York state penal law, criminal possession of marijuana, depending on the article and subdivision, ranges from class B misdemeanor to class A felony.
