The Racialization of Muslim Veils: A Critique
This essay will be a chance for students to reflect on one article from the syllabus. This article is: Al-Saji, Alia. 2010. “The Racialization of Muslim Veils: A Philosophical Analysis.” Philosophy & Social Criticism36 (8):875–902. The paper must demonstrate a grasp of the key arguments of the article as well as how it relates to the larger themes of the course Islamic Feminisms / Muslim Feminisms as presented in class through the lectures, readings, and class discussions. Your essay should focus on critical engagement and analysis, rather than summarizing the article. The essay should be between 1000 and 1250 words and should adhere to all the standard expectations of an academic essay. Please use APA citation format with the modification that each in-text citation should include a page number. Each essay will be worth 20% of your final grade. Please note that the most important part of this assignment is identifying and developing your own analysis of the article. You will need to have a clear thesis statement. This thesis statement should indicate what your argument is in your essay. This should not be a restating of the thesis statement of the original article. It might be useful to think of it this way: In the article, “title of article”, the author argues _______. In my paper, I will argue ________.” This assignment is about your analysis of an article. It is not meant to be a summary or a re-telling of the article.
