Demonstrate your understanding of how a current educational practice or programme—the subject of the ‘big education debates’ addressed by the unit topics—is shaped by, and shapes, the sociocultural context in which it is located. The task requires you to choose a unit topic from the second module of the unit. Based on the concerns of this topic and the debates you have encountered in the unit, identify a practice, policy, or programme in your workplace, or community setting, with which you are familiar and to which you have access. You should therefore choose a unit topic in which you have a professional interest. The task requires you to critically analyse and discuss the practice, policy, or programme in terms of how it is shaped by, and shapes, the more widespread ways of doing (practices) and knowing (knowledges) of the sociocultural context in which it has emerged. You will be required to conduct a dialogue with a stakeholder or colleague as part of your investigation. You should also collect texts or documents related to the practice, policy, or programme. Your analysis should draw on advanced theory and literature from the unit. The dialogue with a stakeholder or colleague and textual analysis will be used to illustrate your argument. In responding to the assignment task, you are asked to follow the instructions in the section ‘What you need to do’ below. This assignment is considered an authentic piece of assessment because it involves you using advanced sociological theory, and professional dialogue with a colleague or stakeholder, to investigate how a professional practice, policy, or programme in your workplace or professional field shapes, and is shaped by, the contexts of knowledges and practices in which it is situated
