Read The Good Brahmin by Voltaire on page 429 of the text. (Note: a Brahmin is a Hindu priest. The class of priests have historically held the highest position in society. Brahma and Vishnu are Hindu Gods). What reasons does the Brahmin give for being so unhappy? What reasons does the old woman give for being so content? Which life does the Brahmin desire? Which person would you rather be (explain your answer)? If Socrates were reading this, which person would he say is living the more meaningful life (explain your answer)? Does this story suggest that happiness is essential if you want your life to be meaningful? Explain your answer. Are happiness and meaningfulness the same thing? Explain your answer. Can a person be miserable and still live a meaningful life? Explain your answer. Can a person be happy and live a life without meaning? Explain your answer.
