The effect of having blacks play the main roles
You will be required to submit an essay of 4-5 pages in length on one (or several) of the works we will be reading. Your paper can be an analysis of the theme of a given short story, poem or novel, a comparison between two characters from different novels or plays, an analysis of the style of a particular author, etc. Many students identify a specific theme found in several works and provide an analysis of how that theme is present in those works. To do this, you may cross genres to make the analysis even more provocative. There are several possibilities, and we will discuss topics for this paper in class. Additionally, consult your textbook for essay ideas as there are potential topics scattered throughout the book. This essay must be typed, double-spaced, and adhere to MLA guidelines. As with your other essays, this is a FORMAL essay complete with introduction, body, and conclusion. Recall everything you learned in your composition classes in terms of how an essay is structured, how sources are used and cited, appropriate titles, tone, point of view, etc. Note: do not use 1st person point of view in this essay. Chose Fences by August Wilson The Prompt that you will chose for this paper is: In many American plays, blacks play only minor roles or are only mentioned in passing by the main characters. Wilson reverses this by only referring to white characters but never having them appear on stage. What effect does this have on the play? How does their absence and presence inform the characters’ world? Would the play be more effective or less effective if the white characters mentioned in the play were more present? Provide textual evidence to support your answer.
