The CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR)
The practice of epidemiology evolved from the investigation of acute outbreaks of infectious disease. Outbreak investigation remains one of its primary purposes. This week, you have reviewed the basic principles and concepts of epidemiology, including why and how outbreaks are investigated. You have also been introduced to important sources of information about current outbreaks around the world. To prepare for this Discussion: Identify a recent acute outbreak using either the CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) website or the World Health Organization (WHO) site. Provide a hyperlink to your source. By Day 4, post a comprehensive response to the following: Briefly describe the outbreak in terms of key descriptive concepts (person, place, time) and the epidemiologic triad (i.e., host, agent, environment). How did people affected differ from those not affected, if at all. How was the outbreak initially discovered and how was it investigated. Was a definitive diagnosis made in all cases reported or were there possible, probable, and definitive case definitions? Comment on the diagnostic criteria that were used. Describe efforts made to control the outbreak. How is the incident you recounted consistent with the definition of epidemiology? And these two question need to be answer with my assignment. 5. What are some reasons why an outbreak may not be investigated? 6. What is an epidemic curve, and why is this important?
