You will be writing a 2-3 page critique of a recent editorial. An editorial is an opinion piece that reflects the viewpoint of the writer – You must locate an editorial from the past three months in one of the newspapers held in the Peirce Library database, EBSCOhostProcedure: In your critique, you must include the following four areas (minimum of one body paragraph each, for a minimum total of four body paragraphs. Formal introductory and conclusion paragraphs must also be included. The structure of the paper is as follows: Introduction: Have a hook to get reader’s interest. State the name of the newspaper, the title of editorial, and the date on which the editorial was originally published. Add a thesis that shows ALL main sections of the critique (strengths, weaknesses, and needed changes) Body Paragraph 1: Summarize the editorial’s main points Body Paragraph 2: Explain the strengths of how the writer presented his/her position on the editorial’s topic. What information or opinions were presented convincingly andwhy were they convincing? This is NOT whether you agree or disagree with the author’s position because that is entirely opinion-based. Instead, it is an evaluation of the persuasive writing skills that were well-executed in the editorial. Body Paragraph 3: Explain the weaknesses of how the writer presented his/her position on the editorial’s topic. What information or opinions were weakly presented or not convincing and why were they not convincing? This is NOT whether you agree or disagree with the writer’s position. Instead, it is an evaluation of the persuasive writing skills that were poorly executed in the editorial. Body Paragraph 4: Explain what changes you would have made to the editorial to make it more effective in its persuasive purpose. What you would have done differently than the writer and why? Remember to explain why these changes would strengthen the persuasive nature of the editorial. Conclusion: Summarize the strengths, weaknesses, and changes from the body paragraphs. End with a concluding technique that makes the end of the paper feel complete for a reader.
