TASKS Scenario You are the assistant manager of Lady Bird Care Homes (a 75 bed residential setting for the elderly and disabled clients). You have just been assigned a group of new employees who need to undergo induction. In the same home, you have received a new client, Mary Brown, who is undergoing significant changes in her life. Mary is a 65-year-old female of Asian descent, suffering from a cerebral palsy with epilepsy, slurred speech, hearing impairment and learning difficulty. She speaks very little English and has no formal education. She was admitted following the death of her Mother who had cared for her all her life and following allegations of systematic abuse by her Aunt and step father who took over her care after the death of her mother. With her deteriorating mental state and physical condition, it was obvious that the immediate relatives could no longer cope with her care. Mary was receiving direct payment for her care but that has been stopped also because the step-father could not account for the money he had received. Prior to her admission, there was a client need-assessment and care planning which was agreed by Mary, her step-father and social worker. Since her admission there has been no contact with her family. Three months after her admission, she has become more isolated; she is missing meals and refuses to attend the day centre and physiotherapy sessions as per her care plan. You have not been made aware of all this as the communication books indicated she was doing well. Her social worker came for a review visit and approaches you to demands an explanation as to why Mary has not been attending her day centre and physiotherapy sessions.
