Description
Essay 2 – Rhetorical Analysis For this essay, you will write a rhetorical analysis essay of an article, video, or other source about a topic of your choice related to the misinformation/disinformation theme. Topic Selection Since you will be writing a rhetorical analysis essay, you will need to choose a piece of writing (article, web page, etc.) or a video (or an informational advertisement) relating to a topic of the theme of misinformation/disinformation. It is important that you choose a source that is detailed enough that you will be able to identify instances of the author using rhetorical appeals (logos, pathos, ethos). IMPORTANT – You are not writing about the topic of the video, ad, or text! You are writing about how the author of that video, ad, or text uses rhetorical appeals (logos, pathos, ethos) to get the message across to the audience. You may choose one of the videos or web pages listed in the Theme Topics of this course, or you may want to search the web on your own, or you may find something by searching through the library. Arrangement of the Essay Your essay should be organized in the typical 5-paragraph essay style with an introduction, several body, and concluding paragraphs. There should be at least one body paragraph for each of the rhetorical appeals (logs, pathos, ethos), but you may find that you want to write more than one for any particular appeal that you want emphasize in the essay. There is no requirement for which appeal is addressed first (the order of your body paragraphs), but it is suggested that you save your most significant or interesting appeal for last. For example: Introduction (with thesis statement) Body Paragraph 1 (Logos) Body Paragraph 2 (Pathos) Body Paragraph 3 (Ethos) Concluding Paragraph Each body paragraph should go into significant detail describing how the author uses the appeal and how effective it is with regard to providing a convincing point.
