Summary of Shield’s “Passionate Men, Emotional Women” by Psychology Constructs Gender Difference in the Late 19th Century Stephanie A.
Summarize the two articles below. By “summaries” I mean a description of the main thesis of an article. These are not opinion pieces. They are not argumentative. Your goal is not to agree or disagree with the author, but to capture their main thesis. There are three key questions a good summary must cover. 1. What is the central argument (or “global thesis”) the author is defending? Think big picture here. 2. Who or what are they arguing against? Who are the targets? 3. What kinds of arguments and what kind of evidence do they use to support their position?
Anything less than 400 words will lose 15 points automatically (independently of quality) B. Each summary must include minimum of 3 short quotes from the reading. C. Cover the whole piece. Don’t start writing your summary as you are reading, because you end up covering only the beginning of the article before you run out of space. Your piece must capture the idea of the whole (not just the introduction or the first half). D. In writing these assignments, avoid evaluative claims like “I personally thought that…” or “I agree [or disagree] with the author because.” This assignment is meant to help you hone in your expository writing skills. Put yourself in the position of a reporter who is merely reporting the core idea behind the text. HOW WILL THESE BE GRADED? In general these will be graded on quality of writing (no grammar errors, good syntax, clarity of expression, etc.) [for total of 50 points] and comprehension (understanding of key concepts, grasp of the author’s global thesis, understanding how evidence is being used) [for a total of 50 points]. This adds to 100 possible points. SUMMARIES Summary #1 (400-500 words):
