The following instructions we have to maintain- Research Paper The Research Paper Assignment (Adapted from the QC 110 English page) It is time to begin preparing for your research paper. A research paper is a student version of what is, for a professional scholar, referred to as a scholarly article or academic paper. Students write such papers as part of the development of their intellectual skills, and in order, as part of their liberal education, to gain knowledge of the procedures of the academic world that has so much influence over all of our lives. A major focus of this class is to develop in you the skills to write a paper properly and well; thus, we do long scaffolded, step-by-step development of the paper, which, in fact, is what one seriously and responsibility does in professional research writing. Doing research and research writing develops critical thinking skills in the most practical and applied of intellectual ways. The point to focus on now is that the start of the research process for you will be first in the identification of a research problem. Research originates in the recognition of a problem – a conceptual or practical problem – that the researcher wishes to investigate and further understand, or try to solve. The process of critical thinking leads researchers then to direct questions at the problem, and, in time, the researcher becomes focused on one question that will direct the research: the research question. Research then continues in the effort to answer the question. The development of a research question is a process that takes place before the development of a claim (thesis). The claim is a response to the research question. The research question will direct your research, as you seek information that may help you to answer the question. You need to develop a research question before you can ever determine what your claim is. Topic This class offers a unique approach to the research paper project in which you will be expanding on a previous paper to incorporate research into. Consider this a hybrid of a research paper since in this instance, research will serve as more evidence for your paper. Method You will have views, of course – you will have a claim, the support of which, in order to persuade your readers of its truth or intellectual value, will be the whole purpose of the paper. However, research writing is about extensively supporting your views with the evidence of research. Researchers thus pursue sources of evidence. One kind of source is a primary source of evidence. For a physical anthropologist, this might be actual fossil remains out in the field – thus the term “field work.” For a literary scholar – a professor of English, let’s say – a primary source would commonly be the actual poetry of a poet. Secondary sources in either example would be publications by the anthropologist or English professor, based on their primary research, in a book or in article form in an academic or scholarly journal. Tertiary sources are popular magazines and newspaper and internet sites that may report on what has been published in secondary sources. High school students frequently make use of tertiary sources when writing research papers. Professional scholars and college students do not use tertiary sources, only primary and secondary sources.
