Social Work: Leadership PowerPoint Presentation

Overview: Students are to create a PowerPoint presentation on different styles of leadership, an analysis of your own personal style, and an action plan to improve your leadership skills. Please see Course Schedule for relationships between this assignment, course objectives, and competencies. Purpose: This project is intended to give you an opportunity to apply concepts in the readings and discussion about the impact of different leadership styles in the field. Requirements: For this assignment, you will be creating a PowerPoint presentation according to the guidelines below. Please title your slides and/or use headings to label the material that corresponds with each point in the outline below so that I can easily determine whether you have covered all of the required material. The leadership PowerPoint presentation will be graded based on whether you have thoughtfully and thoroughly responded to all of the points below. Grammar and proofreading will count toward 10% of the grade. Additional points may be deducted for grammar or proofreading issues that are so severe that they distract from or obscure the points made in the presentation. PowerPoints will also be posted for peer discussion and feedback. Instructions: The material in the leadership unit included three different sets of criteria for effective leadership: a) The leadership triangle of personal attributes, skill competencies, and leadership intuition (Holosko, 2009, pp. 452-453); b) Five core leadership attributes (Holosko, 2009, p. 454); and c) Four domains of management skills (executive leadership, resource management, strategic management, and community collaboration; Human Services Management Competencies linked from slide 3 of the DP 7 leadership PowerPoint). Note: When utilizing the Human Service Management Competencies, you do not have to go into all 21 areas in detail. Think instead about the four domains and select several relevant -points from each section. You will utilize each of these as you respond to the prompts below. 1. Ineffective Leadership a. Think about an example of an ineffective leader you have worked with. Present a brief introduction including the setting and what it was like to work with this person. Feel free to change identifying details as needed. b. Using one of the three sets of criteria listed above (a, b, or c in the Instructions paragraph), provide an analysis of how and why this person was not an effective leader, and how they could improve. 2. Effective Leadership a. Think about an example of an effective leader you have worked with. Present a brief introduction including the setting and what it was like to work with this person. Feel free to change identifying details as needed. b. Using another one of the three sets of criteria listed above (select a different one than you used for #1), provide an analysis of how and why this person was an effective leader. 3. Self-Assessment a. Present a brief overview of your own experiences with leadership. Were you ever president of a club? A supervisor at a job? A leader of a team? What were these experiences like for you? b. Using another one of the three sets of criteria listed above (select the remaining one that you did not use for #1 or #2), provide an analysis of your own leadership skills, including your areas of strength and areas where growth is needed. c. Select at least two areas which you identified in yourself as needing improvement, and provide an action plan for how you will work to increase your skills. What can you do in the short term? What can you do in the longer term? d. Find at least one outside resource that you feel will be helpful to you in continuing to develop as a leader. This could be a website, a TED talk, a scholarly article, etc. Share that resource with us, and tell us what you like about it!
