Does the result support the theory, refute it, or not address it at all? Step 5: Alternative Explanations How else could you explain the evidence? In the discussion section of the paper, authors typically address alternative explanations. Either put their comments into your own words, or think independently. Step 6: Put it all together: Introduce the topic, discuss the article, evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the evidence as it relates to the theory, and provide an alternative explanation.
