INFORMATION Learning Outcomes 1,2,3,4 Weighting The assessment of this module is a research protocol which sets out your ‘blueprint’ of how you are planning to investigate/research something that is relevant to your course (i.e if Primary Care Nursing you would be expected to investigate something related to that). It is expected that your proposal will detail your plans as to how you would undertake a primary research investigation. Assessment Description The recommended layout for the written proposal is as follows: • Title and abstract – 250 words max not included in your word count • Content Page with page numbers • Background information/brief summary of existing literature – including key resources. – no more than 1000 words is recommended – including literature sourcing method is NOT mandatory.
• The hypothesis (Only if relevant) and the aims/objectives, including who will benefit from the research/inquiry. • Methodology – It is important to present the proposed research methodology (e.g. techniques, sample size, target populations, equipment and data analysis) and explain why it is the most appropriate methodology to effectively answer the research question/aims. You must also justify the methodology by explaining what alternatives have been considered and why these have been disregarded. This will include your paradigm choice(s) relating to Learning Outcome 1. around 2000 words recommended for this section. • How the research will be communicated to the wider community • Ethical considerations, organisational permissions. – learning outcome 4 at least 500 words is recommended. • Summary and conclusions – Make sure these are concise, clear and informative. • Include word count DO NOT GO OVER – this can be checked! Important notes Be clear, objective, succinct and realistic in your objectives Ask yourself why this research is important and/or timely State and justify your objectives clearly (“because it is interesting” is not enough!) Make sure you answer the questions: how will the research benefit the wider society or contribute to the research community? Do not use overly long sentences and don’t be frightened to use subheadings. Remember – if you don’t understand it when you read it, neither will anyone else!! Intended learning outcomes for the assessment Your protocol MUST meet all of the below learning outcomes in order to pass this module. Knowledge and understanding learning outcomes: 1.Demonstrate a critical understanding of your chosen paradigm(s) and methodological perspectives. 2. Critically analyse appropriate literature to rationalise the chosen research topic and justify the methodological choices at each stage of the research proposal. Intellectual, practical, effective and transferable skills learning outcomes 3. Evaluate and apply principles of research design and strategy to formulate a research proposal. 4. Critically debate the ethical issues related to research.
