Selection At google
READ THE CASE: SELECTION@GOOGLE ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS AND SUBMIT THROUGH CULEARN ASSIGNMENT TOOL: RELEVANT COURSE MATERIAL: You should be drawing on the material from Topic 3 “Selection” and from Chapter 4 in your textbook to answer these questions. You may wish to pay particular attention to the material on BIBs, information about their usefulness as selection tools, and how I-O psychologists assess the effectiveness of their selection tools. 1. Introduce the case briefly. Why did Google change its selection system? How was the selection system changed? 2. Do you think the changes implemented are an improvement compared with Google’s previous selection system? Why or why not? 3. Do you agree that using an online biographical information blank (BIB) is the best way for Google to manage the large volume of applications? Why or why not? Be sure to consider issues of privacy, and potential for adverse impact on minority applicants. 4. Do you think the new system will be more effective at helping Google to hire candidates who will be more “well rounded” (i.e., have demonstrated abilities in leadership, teamwork, creativity, etc.)? Why or why not? What alternative ways are there of identifying the kind of “well-rounded” candidates Google is looking for? 5. Pretend you have been put in charge of staffing at Google. How would you determine whether the online BIB and interviews are helping Google accomplish its employee selection objectives? ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************ Use the following guidelines when writing/submitting your paper: Formatting and Style: Re-type each question from the assignment, and type your answer underneath. Your paper should be free of typos, spelling mistakes and grammatical errors. It should ‘flow’ and be easy to read. Write in complete sentences and complete paragraphs. Papers should be about 4 -7 pages, double-spaced, 12-point font Number the pages!! Use MS WORD or similar to complete your assignment (If I can’t open it, I can’t grade it) Include your STUDENT ID in the header of the document. All assignments must be submitted using the cuLearn Assignment tool (Do NOT email it to me!) References/citations: The content for this assignment should be drawn primarily from course material, including lectures and the textbook. Unless you use sources outside of this list, you NEED NOT include a reference list (or bibliography) at the end of your assignment. You may cite specific sources WITHIN the paper if you would like to draw my attention to specific aspects of the course material you are drawing from (i.e., lecture, textbook, case scenario). GRADING/EVALUATION: A detailed grading rubric for the case assignments will NOT be available in advance. But, the following guidelines should be useful. Assignments are comprised of your responses to several questions. Between 10 and 20% of the assignment grade will be allotted for style/formatting issues. Generally speaking, your assignment grade will be based on the extent to which you are able to meet the following basic criteria: a) Answer the question, the whole question, and nothing but the question. Marks will be lost if only part of the question is answered, or something is provided that doesn’t actually address the question. Read the questions carefully, and make sure that your response addresses each part of the question. b) Provide a good answer, one that is supported by evidence. Often there is a correct, or at least a more correct, response to these questions. Draw on more than just your own opinion or gut feeling when formulating your answers. Your responses should be informed responses. Use the case, the relevant lecture materials, and the textbook to support your responses. c) Provide examples or illustrations if you are asked to do so. Students often lose points because of partially completed answers.
