Summarize what statistics say about drug use, conviction and prison terms by race. 3.) Describe how the section analyzes the role of media in creating and/or contributing to these stereotypes and inaccurate beliefs. 4.) Ultimately, the so-called “objective reality” of illegal drug use by race is out of sync with what many Americans believe to be true. Please Read Chapter 1 from Lewis and Jhally’s book “Enlightened Racism” Then please view the clip from the Cosby Show entitled “Vanessa’s Rich.” Afterward, please address the following “FOR” position below: The FOR position states: In the context of the 1980s racial climate and the prime time TV market, “The Cosby Show” family, the Huxtables, represent a significant departure from previous TV racial stereotypes of low-income, lazy, uneducated, hustlers. Despite the fact that the program never truly depicts society or family struggles with racism, it makes great strides by depicting African Americans as full and complex human beings rather than one-dimensional stereotypes. Use information from the excerpt from Enlightened Racism and one theory from Chapter 8 of the textbook, “Mass Communication Theory Foundations” to build a case to support your position. /|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/| C.) How does various media use (actively chosen or passively received) affect your mood? Please use one of the theories from Chapter 7 and 8 to explain. Also, using information from Chapter 7 and 8, please define and analyze some of the major “Audience Theories” and provide your perspective or opinion on the theory you choose. Also, please describe “Social Marketing Theory” and please give 1 example to illustrate it. /|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/| D.) Please refer to Chapter 10 and Chapter 11. Also, please focus on concepts such as Framing Theory, Agenda-Setting, the Spiral of Silence, Cultural Studies and others. to assist in solving the following problem. There has been a lot of controversy about the role that news media played before the U.S. went to war against Iraq after September 11. As you may recall, the Bush administration stated the war was necessary because Saddam Hussein possessed “Weapons of Mass Destruction” that posed a severe and urgent danger to the U.S. and Israel. It was later discovered that these WMD did not exist. According to New York Times columnist Tom Wicker, the American press was “overly acquiescent” and “failed sufficiently to question premises and examine evidence” from official sources. Wicker and others believe that the media did not do its job to adequately inform and warn the American public. Many people who take this position have also stated that they believe that after 9/11 there was a climate that suggested that patriotism meant loyalty to the current administration and their decisions to keep the U.S. safe from further terrorist attacks. They believe the media did not sufficiently challenge the claim of “weapons of mass destruction” for fear of appearing unpatriotic. Problem To Be Solved: Agreeing with Wicker’s view and the other components of it described above. Please explain why you agree while using resources in Chapters 10 and Chapter 11. /|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/|/| E.) What is hegemony and how does it operate to influence us in our beliefs and values without the use of force but, nevertheless, with a forceful impact? What are some ways that you can see hegemony operating in your life? How can we detect these invisible beliefs that have been installed in us so that we can make independent decisions about what information and knowledge we want to consider in order to form our own conclusions? Also, please speak on the Entertainment Theory and analyze whether or not it is a “good” theory. Ultimately, does this theory improve the social world?
