Research Paper at a Glance We are learning to better understand current issues by examining how authors contextualize them in large work of non-fiction. In order to develop this skill, we will be examining the implied and stated meanings of a primary source. We will further develop our understanding of the contemporary issues through the use of secondary sources. By using this combination of sources, you should formulate an argument based on your synthesis of said sources. Main Goals for Research Paper • Practice close reading and analysis of the primary source (OITNB) to find meaning. • Develop an awareness of information literacy practices needed for gathering of secondary sources (i.e. using the library, its databases, and other types of search engines). • Annotate, analyze, and evaluate ALL sources through the Citrus Guide reading strategies & charts. • Generate ideas about what to write through the process of freewriting, brainstorming, and outlining (e.g. using your charts, listing/bullet-pointing, etc.). • Develop an original argumentative thesis that requires integration of primary and secondary sources in the essay to support the thesis. • Use a systematic method for accurately recording research from primary sources, secondary sources, and student analysis (e.g. your charts!!). • Demonstrate an ability to quote & paraphrase secondary sources effectively & correctly. • Create a works cited page and implement in-text citations using MLA 8 standards; there must be 5-7 sources used total ( at least 3-4 must be scholarly articles from library databases; 2-3 “popular” or Google sources) o Orange is the New Black is not included in this outside source count, but still must be included on the Works Cited page. o One of your sources must also be Sarsini’s or Maher’s articles.
