The Interrelationship among Theory, Practice, and Research The interaction between theory, nursing practice, and research focus on issues that are pertinent to improve healthcare practice through collaborative research. A theory is a collection of thoughts or beliefs. A theory is general principles that guide in building up an understanding of or gives reasoning to a course of action. It provides a system of nursing ideas that guide and direct nursing practice (Nursing Theory Definition, 2016). During the late 1800s, a strong emphasis was on nursing education, which prompted the rise of nursing theory. It produced as a way to clarify and offer a reason to nursing care, and additionally, give the basis to clinical decision making. Nursing theories were developed mainly by nurses and physicians. Theories are part of nursing practice. Nurses pick and choose the best nursing theory to fit the best situation to achieve nursing practice. For example, whenever I notice a change of discomfort from patients such as a headache or migraine before I call the attending physician. I wet a washcloth with cold water, and I placed it over the patient forehead than I procedure to call the doctor. Within a minute or two, I helped ease the patient discomfort. About 90 percent of the time, my patient acted as if I came up with that idea, but using cold therapy is known over 150 years, according to Sprouse-Blum et al., (2013). The gratitude and love I received are one of the most straightforward nursing care that does not cure the disease, but it helps decrease their symptoms. (Sprouse-Blum et al., 2013) Many people find cold therapy help relieve migraines headaches because it constricts the blood vessels. Another example I learned from fellow nurses which research has proven its effectiveness; when my patient has symptoms of nausea, if the patient does not currently have any antiemetic medication on file, I would have the patient inhale alcohol swabs till I receive an order. According to (Lindblad et al., 2018) inhaled isopropyl alcohol and taking ondansetron has no adverse effects. After half an hour, the nausea score improved as compared to the patient that take ondansetron. The interaction between theory, nursing practice, and research are interrelated. Nursing theory help guide professional practice because the nursing theory has contributed to the expended knowledge that is unique to the nursing profession. (Butts & Rich, 2015) It provides a systematic approach to patient care and serves as a tool for critical thinking and decision making in nursing practice. It aids the understanding of patient behavior in which help nurses function therapeutically. References Butts, J. B., & Rich, K. L. (2015).
