Write a 750-1,000-word essay (NOT research paper). Explain how Walt Whitman uses symbolism to express his feelings about the death of Lincoln in “When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d.” Discuss Whitman’s attitude towards Lincoln. Remember to cite the work itself to support your points. In each of these essays, you may simply discuss the issue, but if you choose to argue a position, you are required to present both sides of the issue fairly and objectively.
