Race, Identity, History
Let’s talk about race! As “No Name Woman” draws connections between the struggles Chinese women face in both the past and the present, across generations, “Interpreter of Maladies” presents dynamic interconnections of ethnic, national, and generational factors (and factors of gender as well). Morrison’s “Recitatif” shows that as much as one may try to remove differences of race, they will still be there! Using 2-3 course texts, write a claim-based essay investigating themes of race and racial identity. How do the texts’ representations of ethnicity, heritage, and so on inform, expand on, and/ or challenge you or your reader’s understanding of these concepts? In addition, your essay must have a distinct counterargument paragraph, in which you refute or reconcile an opposing/ alternate viewpoint to your claim. You will also include a Works Cited page at the end of the essay, in MLA format. Lastly, the essay should also have its own title.
