punk music – choose two songs and answers questions er details
Using two songs from the additional listenings (not the required listenings), answer one of the following questions: (a) How do you understand the sociological figure of the “punk” to be gendered? Use your two songs to compare and contrast two historical moments. Think about gender beyond biology. How does punk break social and cultural conventions regarding gender? How has that changed over time? (b) What (or who) is a bohemian and how does punk connect to the artistic legacy of bohemianism? Use two songs to compare and contrast two historical moments. Avoid the dictionary definitions of bohemianism and engage with the legacy of specific artists that we explored in this course (e.g. Andy Warhol, La Monte Young, Arthur Rimbaud). (c) While what it means to make “independent” music has become increasingly complicated over time, the term still carries specific and important connotations which emerging artists continue to call upon. Using two songs, explore the varying stakes involved in claiming music as “independent” (e.g. sound, instrumentation, fashion, politics, institutional affiliations, etc.). Your two song selections should not be from the same week, and you should strive to make contrasting selections. To receive full points, you must make an effort to leave a strictly lyrical analysis and enter into a discussion of sound. Essays should be between 1,750 and 2,000 words (approximately 5-6 pages), size 12 font times new roman and with regular margins. Points will be deducted for going too far over or under the desired length. All papers should have at least three scholarly sources. You can find these sources in journal databases like JSTOR or in the library. Do not cite the lecture slides; the purpose of this assignment is that you do read something not written in bullet points. No papers should be citing wikipedia and double-check with your teaching assistant prior to using any blogs. Use Chicago or MLA style for your works cited. In-text or footnote citations are permissible, but no endnotes.
