The Brief Working on behalf of the selected brand’s advertising department, your brief is to individually plan and create media content which promotes a Scottish ‘product’ e.g. Irn Bru, Tartan Kilt Towels, Arbroath Smokies, Edinburgh Castle Rock sweets, Bawbag underwear, Deep Fried Mars Bars, Haggis, Tunnocks Teacakes, Stirling Castle, the John Muir Way or any other appropriate example. EXAMPLE: You might come up with a festive edition of the Tunnock’s Teacake, flavoured like Christmas pudding or perhaps a magazine spread encouraging people to visit your favourite Scottish destination. Potential options could be a print advert, a leaflet, a poster or infographic, a social media campaign, a radio programme, a page of a newspaper, magazine or website, a storyboarded sequence of a TV advert, or a filmed TV or online advert to help promote the ‘product’. Your media product should target a specific audience (age, gender, lifestyle, JICNAR etc.) and you can negotiate who your target audience is. Choose to make something that interests you and a type of media content that you have the skills and equipment to make. Negotiate the Brief After discussion with your teacher, describe your brief, the ‘product’ you are choosing to promote, and your potential target audience. Generate Ideas Think about the brief and what you might do. What are you trying to achieve? What creative ideas do you have? Think of as many things as you can at this stage — you should have at least three ideas to choose from. Keep any notes, sketches, designs, etc. that you make, so that you can refer to them later on.
Initial Ideas My chosen topic is based on ‘bawbags underwear’ which is a men and women’s underwear brand. The brand sells a variety of mens and womens clothing ranging from tees, socks, bottoms, accessories and there best selling product, underwear. My 1st idea is to have an american over from scotland wanting a souvenir and someone can suggest bawbags underwear which then is agreed on My 2nd idea is to have an american again over from scotland wanting a souvenir, someone can then walk in the room with a pair off bawbags underwear on which the american notices and turns round to the camera and says “bawbags underwear” My 3rd idea is an advert in a poster version, i will display pictures that Now choose your best idea to take forward. After discussion with your teacher, describe your choice of media content and its purpose(s) as well as the level of finish expected. My final idea is to advertise my product by creating an advert which will draw people’s attention by using comedy. Instead off skipping through adverts as you do on a daily basis, rarely there’s a particular advert that catches your eye which is usually the ridiculous funny ones which is what I’m aiming for. Research Now that you have generated some ideas, you need to do some research to help you work out how to take them forward. Your research, might present you with opportunities (things that allow you to take ideas forward), or might present you with constraints or problems (things that mean you might need to change ideas). Complete the following research tasks. Keep notes of your findings. Audience Research Find out about things like who your audience is, what its needs and expectations might be and how you can appeal to it. For example: Look into the target audience and demographics of the TV channel or platform you are thinking of producing for. Look at similar media content across platforms and channels and identify characteristics of your target audience. Consider age ratings and scheduling positions of content similar to yours to gauge audience age. Use the Audience Uses and Gratification Model to identify why your audience will engage with your media content. Research social media/comments sections to find information on audience responses. Look at Maslow’s hierarchy of needs to identify your audience’s main needs. Consult BARB data for information on trends and viewing figures. Create an audience profile or set up a small focus group Conduct a focus group comprised of people who would be within your demographic range and/or survey people within your demographic range. Institutional research Institutional factors can give you opportunities to take ideas forward, or can make it difficult to do some things, meaning that you have to change your plans. Internal factors might include: Time (schedule, deadlines etc.) Equipment Resources Rules and regulations relevant to your school
