Personal narrative
Description
Your assignment is to write your own constitution. Identify four characteristics that make you who you are, and, more importantly, discuss why you stand for those characteristics by identifying and explaining who or what influenced you to make those characteristics a part of you. In essence, you will be writing about four epiphanies in your life. That is, you are explaining how the characteristic you are writing about became such an important part of you and your life. You may want to ask yourself whether you think the way you do about those particular characteristic because of the person or thing that influenced you or because you have scrutinized the characteristic yourself. In setting up your constitution, you should follow the example of Emi Fujii’s Constitution in the textbook (pages 5-8). Make sure that you thoroughly define each characteristic and that you thoroughly explain your influences, and how he, she or it influenced you. While you are more than welcome to come up with other characteristics, some characteristics that previous students have written about include accountability, charity, education, discipline, family, fitness, fortitude, humility, individuality, intellectual growth, hard work, honesty, humor, kindness, love, optimism, religion, selflessness, self-discipline, self-reliance, and spirituality. Remember, since this is your constitution, which represents how you truly feel about things, do not vacillate; instead, write your constitution using a decisive tone. If you are not writing your constitution with a decisive tone, maybe you have not scrutinized the characteristics enough. While this may seem like an easy assignment, be warned; it is not as easy as it appears to be. Some of you may be surprised at what you discover about yourself. The essay that you will be writing for this assignment is not like the typical formal essays that you will be writing for future assignments. First, you do not need to have a long introductory paragraph. In fact, you may modify Fujii’s introduction on page five in your textbook. Of course, make sure you change the date and the things that you stand for. Note that the thesis of Fujii’s essay is the last sentence of her introduction. It informs the reader what her constitution is about and what she will discuss. Second, this essay should be ten paragraphs in length (one introductory paragraph, two paragraphs for each of the characteristics that you stand for, and one conclusions paragraph). Please use proper MLA formatting and style rules. Finally, you may use pronouns that refer to yourself for this assignment only. That is, you must use first person pronouns (I, me, my, mine), not second person pronouns (you, your, yours) in this essay.
