Paper details AFRSTY 230: Black Women’s History The History Makers: Final Project Spring 2019 Description: Each student will choose (or be assigned) one Black Woman’s oral history from The HistoryMakers Digital Archive to analyze based on the topics covered over the course of the semester which include, but are not limited to, slavery, emancipation, education, (im)migrations, women’s work activism, motherhood, etc. Students will be expected to compose a 7-10 page analytical review of their respective history maker and will offer the class 5 minute long oral presentations based on that analytical paper as their final assignment in this class. Students should refer to the weekly reading questions they are required to answer as a helpful point of entry into their interview analyses. In order to conduct a critical analytical review of their interview subjects’ students should consider the following: Listen to the entire oral interview AT LEAST twice. Draft a summary of who your history maker is As a “researcher” you are allowed to draw your own conclusions about “who” your history maker is, however, you must pay particular attention to the ways your history maker talks about themselves Pay attention to the types of questions the interviewers asked your history maker and how they answer those questions (what questions give them pause, what questions make them perk up) Pay particular attention to any statements (or the lack of statements) your history maker asserts about their position or experience as a Black woman in particular. Offer your own critically informed opinion about their lived experiences as a Black Woman. Annotated and Final Bibliographies: Each student should utilize (cite) at least TWO sources from the syllabus and TWO independently researched sources in their analysis of their respective interviews for a total of FOUR bibliographic citations using the Chicago Manual of Style Annotation. See below for example: Davidson, Hilda Ellis. Roles of the Northern Goddess. London: Routledge, 1998. Davidson’s book provides a thorough examination of the major roles filled by the numerous pagan goddesses of Northern Europe in everyday life, including their roles in hunting, agriculture, domestic arts like weaving, the household, and death. The author discusses relevant archaeological evidence, patterns of symbol and ritual, and previous research. The book includes a number of black and white photographs of relevant artifacts.
