Task 1: Opinion Piece
You have this one finished already: a 500-word opinion essay from Lesson 13. If for some reason you haven’t completed the task, here are the Instructions for Opinion Essay once again. Remember: you must submit both your rough draft showing edits and your final proofread essay. Your essay will not be marked if the rough draft with edits is not submitted. In addition, the essay must include quotations that are properly cited.
You will choose one of the following topics to complete. Write an opinion paper of 500-600 words. Be sure to identify your texts and your examples clearly by citing your sources and creating a Works Cited page. You must submit both a rough draft with edits and a final copy. Save your work until you submit it at the end of Lesson 15. Remember, these are topics not thesis statements. You must decide for yourself how to take the topic and turn it into a thesis that you can defend.
Topic 1: “Mad Men” and The Waste Land as Modernist Texts.
What are some common modernist themes that exist in both an episode of “Mad Men” and The Waste Land? Use specific examples from the text to support your opinion. Also consider how someone else might see things differently, that is, include some reference to a different interpretation that you don’t support but that others might. For example, might someone else say that these two texts are more postmodernist than modernist?
Task 2: the great gatsby
As you watch the film, make your own notes using these questions to organize your notes. You will need to submit the answers to these questions in an organized fashion at the end of the lesson. You may use a combination of short answers and paragraph-style answers. It will be evident from the question which length of an answer is needed.
What is the name of the movie?
When was the movie made?
What is the main setting of the movie? (time and place)
Who are the main characters? Which one is the protagonist? Which one is the antagonist? (who are they, describe them briefly)
What is the essence of the problem or conflict that lies at the heart of this movie?
How are the attitudes and perspectives on life from that era reflected in the film?
How is the story helped by camera angles? Provide several specific examples.
How is the story helped by music? Provide several specific examples.
How is the story helped by costumes? Provide several specific examples.
What is the overarching theme of the movie? Defend your choice.
How do these production choices (camera angles, music, costumes) contribute to the overarching feeling that the movie is existentialist, modernist, or postmodernist? Choose one of these three styles and show how production choices helped to illuminate the literary style of the film.
How is this like the poems, songs, or stories you have read in this unit? Make three specific connections.
How is this film different from everything else that you have read, heard, etc., in this unit? Make two specific connections.
Is this movie mostly existentialist in outlook or mostly modernist in outlook or mostly postmodernist in its style? Why do you think that?
Task 3: Script for an Oral Presentation
For this third and final task you will write a script for an oral presentation. Imagine that you are the director of the movie that you watched in Task 2. You have decided to add one more scene at the very beginning of the movie immediately following the opening credits. The purpose of the scene will be to clue the audience on whether this is going to be an existentialist, modernist, or postmodernist movie. Explain your ideas about what you would include in this brief opening scene. It should be abundantly clear from what you say how your creative ideas would reflect an existentialist, modernist, or postmodernist approach to this particular movie.
Write a script, jotting down some big ideas that you don’t want to miss. Your script must include at least one visual aid (a graphic, or a slide).
Your script will be for a presentation of about 2-3 minutes in length.
Submit only a script, not a recording. Be imaginative, creative, engaging, and detailed.
