One Woman, One Vote
After watching the videos, One Woman, One Vote, particularly the section on “Sisters and Strangers,” and “Susan B. Anthony Doesn’t Deserve ‘I Voted’ Stickers” as well as the lectures, in this paper, evaluate the specific racist arguments that were deployed by suffragists. Many in the movement believed that the means justify the ends. What do you think about suffragists like Anthony who abandoned their commitment to racial equality to pass women’s suffrage in their desire for expediency? What do you think of the erasure of women of color suffragists who continued to struggle for equalities? Then, look at critiques today on mainstream feminism’s lack of analysis of race, class, and gender intertwined. This will mean looking at intersectional feminism vs. mainstream feminism. I want you to do a comparison of the historical racism and classism embedded in the suffragist movement to the racism and classism embedded in mainstream feminism. So, make an argument that emphasizes the similarities and differences between the problems in the suffragist movement then and the problems in the mainstream feminist movement today. What I would do for your paper is look up the arguments made by women of color suffragists against white suffragist women and then look up the difference between intersectional feminism and mainstream feminism today. Look at the critiques made by intersectional feminists against mainstream feminist ideologies and see if they are similar critiques made during the suffragist movement. *By mainstream feminism, I do not mean all of feminism but feminism in pop culture and in the media.* Students will be allowed to cite sources from course readings, but will also be asked to cite at least 1 online source (which CAN BE website articles, magazine articles, blogs, etc.).
