In a 5 paragraph essay defend the following statement (remember to take a strong stance in your thesis statement): The growth of industry, the increase in immigration, and the subsequent growth of cities helped cause the Progressive movement which resulted in dramatic political, social, and economic changes. Important: Please pay special attention to the information below: Briefly discuss each of the aforementioned issues (industry, immigration, and urbanization) in your introduction (no more than 2 sentence each). These will serves as your background sentences (see video). Then present your thesis statement. Your thesis statement could be something similar to this, “The Progressive movement resulted in dramatic political, social, and economic changes in America.” Then, in your 3 body paragraphs, discuss each of the effects: political, social, and economic. Here are some tips: In your political paragraph you may want to mention the some of the following: Recall, referendum, primaries v. political machine politics, direct election of senators, women’s suffrage, and split in the Republican Party (1912). In your social paragraph you may want to mention to of the following: laws protecting workers, laws protecting consumers, settlement houses, temperance, the beginning of the civil rights movement for African-Americans (i.e. Washington and DuBois) In your economic paragraph you may want to mention some of the following: Regulation of business (i.e. trust busting), federal income tax, lower tariffs, and the Federal Reserve. Other things to keep in mind: Your introduction will be worth a maximum of 10 points, each body paragraph will be worth a maximum of 25 points each, and your conclusion will be worth a maximum of 10 points. The other 5 points will come from your ability to formulate and articulate a position. You should explore each of the topics that are mentioned in the prompt. Do not write in first or second person. (Don’t use “I”, “me”, “we”, “you”, etc.) For example, instead of saying, “I believe that there were major political, social, and economic ramifications of Progressivism” you would just say, “There were major political, social, and economic ramifications of Progressivism.” This essay should largely be in your own words. Use direct quotations sparingly. If you do quote something directly please make sure to place the quotation in quotation marks and to cite it parenthetically (in-text). No quotation should be over one sentence long. You should have no more than two quotations in your entire essay. If you paraphrase another author please also cite your work parenthetically. Do not forget to include your full citation information at the end of your essay. Two sources must be used in addition to the textbook (that means three sources). Parenthetical in-text documentation as well a works cited page are required. This should be done in MLA format.
