Movie Reaction Paper For The Other Sister, I am Sam, or Children of a Lesser God
Movie Reaction Paper The presence of a disability can affect a number of areas in one’s life. A way for students to become more sensitive to the psychosocial processes in which one lives with a disability is through the mass media, which includes television, film, books, newspaper articles, and magazines. Students in this course will be required to write a 3-4 page reflection paper that incorporates a mass media representation of a disability by watching a film about people with disabilities. The student will discuss the film in terms of the following issues: • what is the movie’s basic story line, plot, and essential characters? What does the work set out to do? (This comment should be rather brief). • How is the person(s) with the disability represented; • Describe the functional limitations experienced by the individual(s) with a disability; • How the disability affected body image and self-perception; • The expressed reactions and coping strategies to the disability; • The ways in which the disability affected family and peer relationships; • Social aspects of the disability with major emphasis on societal attitudes and environmental barriers; • The major issues you would choose to work with this person in rehabilitation counseling; and • Discuss intervention strategies you would consider in working with this client. The following is a partial list of films related to persons with disabilities: My Left Foot; Philadelphia; Leaving Las Vegas; Barfly; Sling Black; Born on the Fourth of July; Music Within, Temple Grandin, As Good As It Gets, A Beautiful Mind, Benny and Joon, Children of a Lesser God, The Other Sister, Regarding Henry, The Water Dance, I am Sam
