Microbiology-Thought
Thought Question Response Writing Assignment For this assignment, you will select one of the following topics, thoroughly consider the various aspects, and write a one-page (and one page only), typed response. Please put the topic at the top of the page. Keep in mind I emphasize quality, not quantity; however, do not confuse short with shallow. Your response should be concise, articulate, and well thought-out. Topics 1. Some human viral diseases, such as smallpox, have been eradicated from the earth. Others, like AIDS, have been much more difficult to control and will likely never be completely eradicated. Discuss several reasons why some viral diseases are vulnerable to eradication while others are not. Support your arguments with current facts you have learned about these viruses and the diseases they cause. 2. It has been said that the immune system is a “double-edged sword.” Though it has the capacity to protect us from an almost unlimited number of invaders, it can also sometimes be responsible for disease. Select two examples where the immune system is actually responsible for disease, and describe the normal, beneficial function which has gone awry. Include some possible explanations for why these situations sometimes happen. 3. We have discussed some bacterial diseases of humans that were unknown 45 years ago. Many of these have been termed “emerging diseases.” Using some specific examples, advance and support some theories for why these bacterial diseases and/or their etiologic agents were not discovered earlier.
