Meeting Reaction Paper
Description
12-Step Meeting Reaction Paper 20% In order to gain perspective on what individuals experience when overcoming addiction, it is helpful to explore the variety of support group options available in the community for individuals with addiction. Students must attend an “open” support group meeting available in your area (i.e., AA, NA, SMART Recovery, Women for Sobriety etc.). Some support groups are based on a 12-step process of recovery while others are based on other principles. In order to gain a better understanding of these types of meetings, you will be required to attend a meeting in person of one type, and to research the other type. So, if you choose to attend an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting (a 12-step meeting) then you will be asked to research another type of meeting (such as SMART Recovery, Women for Sobriety, etc.). You will write a short paper first reflecting fully on your inperson visit, then providing a description of the type of meeting you researched, and finally, providing a compare and contrast view of the two types of meetings. Please remember, anonymity is very important, thus I ask that your reactions not include any names or identifying information of the members of the group. This means that you should not be sharing specific information others in the group have shared, but you may discuss overall topics and your personal reaction to the topics. Content: • Title page • Abstract • Introduction and description of the group attended and personal reaction • Brief summarization of the risks of use/abuse and the addictive nature of the chosen substance or behavior, as per the conversation at the 12-Step Group • Compare/contrast 12-Step meeting to alternative mutual help meeting researched
