Labor Management Relations
You are a manager in a Level IV correctional facility. It is your practice to review the attendance of all the Correction Officers assigned to your Unit on a monthly basis. You provide each employee with a report on his/her attendance for the prior month. Since abuse of sick leave may result in discipline, you want to ensure that the officers assigned to your area are kept informed regarding any issues you may have with their use of sick time. These meetings normally take about five minutes. On this particular day, you call John Smith to your office to discuss his attendance. CO Smith has seven years on the job, and is considered to be a good employee. With the exception of two days sick time that he used last month CO Smith has not used a sick day in two years. When you inform CO Smith of the purpose of your meeting, he requests to have a union representative present. What do you do?
